Travelling to Westminister Secondary School as the top ranked “A” school from Huron Perth, the girls competed at the Western Ontario Secondary School Athletics Association (WOSSAA) championships.

The top four teams from WOSSAA all met up for a day of intense and highly skilled volleyball. The first match of the day for the Vikes was against the eventual gold medal winners Ecole Secondarie Catholique Monsegneur Bruyere.

Playing their best ball, unfortunately it wasn’t enough to win the match. In the bronze medal game, the Vikings easily dismantled the host school, Westminister, capturing the bronze medal.

The team will miss non-returning players Erin Hastie, Natalie Van Niejenhuis, Sarah Strickland, Neeliah Lewis and Chelsea Virtanen-Murphy.

Erin and Natalie were easily the best middle combination in the league this year, always throwing up big blocks and well placed swings.

Neeliah contributed as a right side player and always helped out in a fix. Chelsea was an important fixture to the team and co-captain Sarah was always known for her speed, clutch serving and ability to fix any problem with a smile on her face. Trinity McMichael is returning next year and her intensity and skill will help the Vikes reach success once again.

First year starter, Masi Frayne, did an incredible job setting this year while Grace Taylor and Hannah Pollock gave the Vikings some serious left side power.

Megan Kovats showed great improvement over the season as a natural athlete in the libero position.

First year players Robyn MacPhee, Hayley Seip, Paige Chebott, and Alyssa Sturdy all showed dedication and athleticism, and settled nicely into their roles as senior players.

“This team did everything the right way. They practiced hard, set goals, co-operated and had fun. A great team,” admitted Coach Moore.

The squad would also like to congratulate the GDCI junior boys basketball team on their WOSSAA Gold Medal.
